(Vintage Motocross)

Saturday 24 April 2010 Kukutauaki Road, Koputaroa, Levin

Yes, that's right.....The Johnny Old Motocross is going to run at the same property it was held in the 70's and 80's with thanks to Mrs Flora Old and Peter Bartholomew.

This time around it will be open to vintage motocross bikes only (Pre86 and earlier)

The track itself will be a remake of the original as much as possible. At this stage we are starting a data base for those wishing to take part. To do this simply send us an email with your name, address, phone and bikes you are wishing to ride to: jo.owen@xtra.co.nz

Once we have your details, we will be able to forward to you all progress with the event including the entry form. So....get the news out to everyone and lets make this day huge! Don't forget to email us direct jo.owen@xtra.co.nz

South Canterbury Motorcycle Club

100th Centenary

23rd, 24th & 25th October 2009

There are lots of opportunities for VMX riders to get involved in the weekend with Pre 75, Twinshock and Pre 86 motocross on the Saturday at Pleasant Point and Miniature TT at Levels Raceway infield on the Sunday for the same classes.

Now if you are really keen there is also the gravel hillclimb on Saturday morning that is a reenactment of the South Canterbury clubs first hill climb event back in October 1909.

There are of course socials on the Saturday evening and a dinner on the Sunday. The Classic-VMX motorcross in 2009 is the 25th Anniversary event for Ray Johnston, Malcolm Hill and the crew of vets down in Timaru as they held the first classic scramble in New Zealand at Taiko, as part of the clubs 75th Anniversary.

So get your teams together and make the trek down south for an event to remember, and a bunch of Australian VMX riders are heading over also.

Invitations have been sent out to the over 250 riders who have competed at Taiko in the past 24 years, so it’s gonna be huge.

A message from the Feltons..........

Hi everyone,

Sorry for this late thank you and update on our situation.

Words can’t in this letter relay the uplifting support that you all in the VMX family have given to our little Megan.

I apologize for this late entry. The last two months have been “MAD”

A special thank you to TM Bill, Macka, DJ, Captain Kirk, Roger De’coster, Russell.

All the boys from OZ ,VMX mag, and “the Man” Brad van from Brisbane.

And all the Kiwi VMX friends .

The amount that you all raised for Megan was unreal, and has helped her out so much with her treatment.

We can’t thank you all enough.

Megan is the result of a MIS-MANAGED labour, and very poor medical treatment from a major Auckland Hospital.

The standard of care she received makes me embarrassed to be a Kiwi.

And I had lost my faith in people. Until there was VMX on our side. Thanks guys .

Megan has made very good progress, as her original prognosis was very grim.

She has started to crawl, and hold her head up and much more.

We hope to take Megan to the US soon for Stem Cell treatment.

Megan and Jackie are home now with me. Each day we try our best and work with Megan’s rehabilitation.

So thank you all again so very much for your very kind help and financial support for Megan.

I miss going to the meetings and seeing my friends, but hope one day soon to ride with you all and keep “Nev” Coombe’s honest…..

Thank you and all the best to you all

Megan Jackie and Mike Felton.

Round Two of the South Island VMX Tri-series

Scott Mainland Classix MX Series - Rnd 2 - Dovedale, Nelson August 08

The second round of the 2008 Scott series was held in exceptionally wet conditions after 40mm of heavy rain fell between setting the track and using it the next day!.....

But No, did sanity prevail? We are talking about classic racers aren't we? ....

Eventually the Question was asked and a resounding 'Of course we want to ruddy well race!' came back to us. And Oh Boy did we have fun and games after that.....

What can you do with a wide open space? One in a valley surrounded with hills clothed in white, where the sun shines down warmly upon you and the birds chirrup joyously from the fence rows?

How about crank up a few throttles, throw roost at each other, cut each other off in the holeshot corner, throw caution to the wind on a straight just perfect for a XL600 vs YZ465 comparison (including many muttered prayers about brakes and the end corner) .........

The latest article in our new "Bikes & Riders" series

HONDA XR200 (1982)

The big news from Honda this year is a promise for a brand-new line of CRs. What with all the rumors flying around, we can't wait to get our greasy paws on the new bikes, but unfortunately, they won't be available for some time yet. The XRs, however, are out and ready, although we can't say they're entirely new bikes. But they are not the same old things, as a host of minor detail improvements have combined to make the new XRs just a little better than last year's effort.

Livewire VMX North Vs South - October 21/10/07

What a day - 129 entries, soft, loamy soil without dust (well, until the last race anyway) and some ruddy tough competition that, again, came down to the wire. That feature NvS race was a battle alright, not an inch given freely, even the bungy tried to keep the North ahead, but eventually gave in to the efforts of an attached B50!.......

KAWASAKI KX125 A8 (1982)

If they could ever just put it all together," moaned the Kawasaki freak. " One year they've got the motor of death, but the suspension is straight out of the Stone Age. The next year, they've got the hot ticket on suspension and the motor is such a dog you have to run it on a 20:1 ratio of Alpo to Chuck Wagon. When will they ever get it all together?" It appears that 1982 will be the year.

Taupo VMX

"The Felton Family Charity MX"  28/07/07

Words by DJ, Pics by DJ & Karen

There are events that mark time and there are events that time is marked by. Who would have thought that such an event would take place the weekend of the 28/29 of July in Taupo, New Zealand. But yes, an event that all others will now be judged by has successfully and so dominantly stood up that we now have the ‘pre Taupo’ and ‘post Taupo’ era.

This was a special meeting because we were there not only to ride but to help a fellow VMXer and his family. The ‘Felton VMX’ meeting came about through the ingenious planning of Gerald, Mac and Bill. Taupo VMX club hadn’t run a meeting for about 6 months, so the boys’ got together and came up with a fun day vmx ride and later that night an auction with the proceeds being donated to Mike and Jackie for the purpose of helping their daughter Megan.........

Rain, wind, lahars, plus more rain. Who would have thought with the weeks leading up to round 4 at Halcombe that we would only race once before the track was turned into a mud bath. Even with the rain the night before the creek was as dry as a bone, but within a couple of hours it was knee deep from the heavy down pours that hit just after riders briefing......

by DJ

We’ve had Waverley and we’ve had Taupo. Been there, done that, not to mention a long Christmas break as well. Now Waipukurau is all new. I even got to ride 2 new bikes there. If ya can call a 30yr old bike new. Like everyone else I had no idea what to expect the track to be like but once I saw it, I was looking forward to riding it and have to say it was fun. Even that off camber corner that I just couldn’t find a good line anywhere. And I can tell you I tried every line possible. Some I wasn’t even trying for, but what the heck, the bike wanted to try them. But when you have a CZ400 hunting ya down any line will do.....

HUSQVARNA 250 CR (1980)

If spec pages and dyno charts revealed everything there is to know about a motocrosser, you'd pass right by the Husqvarna 250 CR. Its anemic horsepower figures and gargantuan chassis dimensions are in turn-appalling and astonishing. But Good Numbers alone don't win races: Every part and design of the CR is complementary, and that's why it's so easy to ride the Husky so fast........

Mr Vintage Motocross - Rnd 1 Waverley  24/09/06

by DJ

The long slow winter came to an abrupt end on Sunday with over 140 VMX bikes converging on the small township of Waverley. This area of the north island would have to be some of the best land for racing vintage mx, with its loam that berms up and creates a track that even lesser mortals can fly on. Once again the boys from Kiwi Vintage MX showed why they can call this series "The New Zealand VMX Championship"........

The Mouse That Roared

by Andy McGechan

Old Yamahas never die, they keep on firing. That’s the firm belief of New Zealand’s Tony Illingworth who spends much of his spare time either restoring or racing vintage Yamaha motocross bikes. The Yamaha stalwart certainly doesn’t shy away from motocross fights and his No.13 machines can typically be found at the front end of the field in this branch of the sport that’s growing in popularity with every passing year.

He owns a staggering 11 Yamaha motocross bikes...

Motocross, yesteryear today. No blouses,no skirts. Only the tough need apply. This track was the King Kong of tracks. Round 4 of the Mr Vintage mx series has always been more of a step toward MX than any other round. Taupo series 1 and Fordell series 2. This year it was a suspension testing, brake burning, arm pumping whopper. If you wanted Motocross, then you got Motocross, this was the place to be........

Round 4 was D-Day. The British invaision.

Mr Vintage Motocross - Rnd 3, Halcombe 12/2/06

Words by DJ

Pics by Andy McGechan (& others)

Can VMX get any better. A greasy track in the morning through to tyre gripping dirt in the afternoon. If the startline was up-hill the day certainly climbed to a peak in the age group races with Morley and Peter giving everyone a demo of how to motocross as (dare I say it) the more mature. Years do not slow these guys down. True Champions, and I was thankful I was there to see it.......

"The Third Series"

Mr Vintage Motocross - Rnd 2, Taupo 12/11/05

By DJ

PhotographHotter than Hell, the only way to describe Rnd 2 of the Mr Vintage MX series. The best of the best were there to step up into the squared ring. Battle after battle was fought that would have made MX des Nations look like kids playing with their Tonka toys in the sand pit. And it wasn't only for first place that these monument us battles were fought. Deep in the heart of the pack where the dust and roost took its toll the action was played out like the running of the bulls. Exhilarating stuff, if not exhausting, as riders and bikes together trying to get the clean line or that elusive bit of visibility to the next corner. All of a sudden it clears and the battles rage on with riders seeing their next victim as they themselves become someone elses next victim.
